At the print counter
Where do you actually print a wedding sign?
An 8x10 is a standard photo enlargement, so a drugstore prints it at full size with no cropping: $4.49 at Walgreens, $4.79 at CVS, free same-day pickup. Ask for matte, because glossy throws the venue lighting across your lettering. Staples is the other answer, cardstock at letter size for $0.82 a colour page, which you trim. Photo lab if it goes in a frame, Staples if it stands alone.
Where do you actually print a wedding sign?
You bought a template, you typed your names into it, and now there is a PDF on your laptop and a wedding in four months. This is the step nobody writes about, and it is the step where the file sits unopened until the week of.
The size is not an accident
An 8 by 10 is a standard photo enlargement. Walgreens lists its print sizes as "4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 4x5.3, 4x4 and 8x8" and gives the aspect ratio plainly: "The aspect ratio of an 8x10 print is 5:4."1 A sign designed at 8 by 10 is therefore not a document that needs resizing. It is a photograph as far as the machine is concerned, and it comes out at full bleed with nothing trimmed off the edges.
That is the whole reason this works. Signs designed at odd sizes have to go to a print shop, get quoted, get scheduled and get collected. A sign designed at 8 by 10 goes in the same queue as somebody's holiday photos.
What it costs, and how fast
Walgreens prices a single 8x10 at $4.49 and advertises "FREE Same Day Pickup at 8,000+ locations."1 CVS prices the same print at $4.79, also for same-day pickup, and lists both glossy and matte.2 Thirty cents apart is not a decision. Choose the one you drive past.
Both work the same way: upload the PDF on their site or app, pick 8x10, pick the store, collect it. No conversation with anyone, no quote, no lead time.
Staples is a different product, not a cheaper one
Staples does not sell photo enlargements at the counter the way a drugstore does. It sells document printing: colour pages at $0.82 each, black and white at $0.34, with free same-day pickup, and a choice of "premium papers including gloss, cardstock, and colored options" priced as an upgrade.3
That reads cheaper and is not comparable. A Staples colour page is letter size, 8.5 by 11, so your 8x10 arrives with a border you trim off with a craft knife and a ruler. What you get for the trouble is real cardstock, which is the thing photo paper cannot be. Thick enough to stand up, thick enough to not curl in a warm room.
So the choice is not about price. It is about whether the sign is going in a frame.
The one thing to ask for: matte
Walgreens offers both finishes, "glossy and matte photo finish for in-store same day pickup prints and Ship to you delivered prints."1 Take matte. Glossy photo paper is built to make a photograph look wet and bright, and it does the same thing to a sign: the venue's ceiling lights land in the middle of your names, and from a few feet away a guest sees a reflection rather than the words. Matte holds the ink flat and reads from an angle, which is how a sign is actually looked at.
This is the sentence that changes the result more than the shop you choose, and it is the one nobody says out loud.
The rule, in one line
Framed, use the drugstore. Unframed, use Staples and ask for cardstock.
Photo paper is thin, and in a frame that does not matter because the frame is doing the standing up. Out of a frame it matters at once: a photo print flops, curls in a humid room and slides down an easel. Cardstock around 100 lb cover holds its own shape. Ask for matte there too, for the same reason.
The frame is the real cost
An 8x10 frame costs more than the print inside it, usually several times more. That is the actual budget line, and it is also the one you can raid: an 8x10 frame is the most common frame size sold, so charity shops, your mother's house and the back of your own cupboard are all full of them. A gold frame from a thrift shop and a $4.49 print is a finished sign for less than the cost of one stem of the flowers next to it.
The order to do it in
Find the frame first. Print second. Doing it the other way round is how people end up with a print they love and a frame that does not exist in that size at the shop nearest the venue on the Thursday before.
The one-hour photo lab arrived in the 1980s and made an enlargement an errand instead of an order. Wedding signage caught up to it about forty years late.
Asked at the desk
Can a drugstore print an 8x10 wedding sign?
Yes. An 8x10 is a standard photo enlargement at a 5:4 ratio, so it prints at full size with no cropping. Walgreens lists 8x10 among its standard sizes.1
How much does an 8x10 print cost?
Walgreens lists $4.49 and CVS $4.79 for a single 8x10, both with free same-day pickup.12 Checked September 2026; photo pricing moves, so treat these as the shape rather than the number.
Is Staples cheaper?
Its colour page is $0.82, but that is letter-size document printing, not an 8x10 photo enlargement.3 You print on 8.5 by 11 and trim. What you are buying there is cardstock, which photo paper cannot be.
Should I choose glossy or matte?
Matte. Glossy reflects the room and puts the venue lighting across your lettering. Walgreens offers both finishes.1
When should I use a proper print shop instead?
When the sign has to stand up without a frame, or when it is larger than a photo lab prints. Ask for cardstock around 100 lb cover or heavier, matte.
Which finish should I ask for at Staples?
Matte, the same as at a photo counter, and for the same reason. A gloss coat throws the venue lighting back at the reader.
What does the frame cost?
More than the print, usually by several times. 8x10 is the most commonly sold frame size, so second-hand is genuinely worth checking first.
